Next meeting: To be determined

The Sophia women's discussion group has found a format that seems to work well to allow reflection, fellowship and, as always, good food. At each meeting someone volunteers to present a short reading to which we apply the Lectio Divina approach. The summer schedule is yet to be decided.  Throughout the school year, we normally gather at 10:30 a.m. on third Wednesdays and after reflecting and commenting, we have potluck brunch!  All are welcome.

  A bit of Sophia history:

How the Sophia group began:  One  Sunday in 2008 during coffee hour, several people began talking about that day's Bible reading and the role of women in the Christian church. Out of that conversation emerged a reading group that has come to be known as Sophia.  Lynn Wake, a writer and former librarian, guides the discussions, along with others.

The group began by reading "The Gospel of Mary of Magdala:  Jesus and the First Woman Apostle" by Karen L. King.

     Here's a taste of King's book:

"The Gospel of Mary . . . suggests that the story of the gospel is unfinished. Christian doctrine and practice are not fixed dogmas that one can only accept or reject; rather Christians are required to step into the story and work together to shape the meaning of the gospel in their own time."

Other books the group has read:

"The Gnostic Gospels" by Elaine Pagels.

"Beyond Belief: The Secret Gospel of Thomas" by Elaine Pagels.

"The Hidden Gospel: Decoding the Spiritual Message of the Aramaic Jesus" by Neil Douglas-Klotz.

"The Wisdom Jesus: Transforming Heart and Mind -- a New Perspective on Christ and His Message"  by Cynthia Bourgeault

"An Altar in the World:  A Geography of Faith" by Barbara Brown Taylor

Julian of Norwich

"The Meaning of Mary Magdalene," by Cynthia Bourgeault
